Ex-Man Utd coach Steele: Henderson ready to replace De Geaby Freddie Taylor10 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele thinks that Dean Henderson is ready to replace David De Gea at the club.Henderson has shone for Sheffield United on loan this season, while he also played for the Blades in the Championship last term.He has also earned a call up to the England squad, which indicates his meteoric rise in the game.”He has all the physical attributes you need,” Steele told The Athletic.”Plus that cockiness and confidence about him. He sees himself as the biggest challenger to David De Gea at Manchester United and I love that. Even though he is not at the club right now.”I have no problems with that. He is doing the right thing and getting experience at a good club. “He is still a young keeper. Peter Schmeichel didn’t come to Old Trafford until he was 28. “David De Gea was the exception at 19 or 20. I have said this to Dean privately. He is still a young keeper.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say read more

Dream big and reach far. Despite injuries, the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team is still pursuing its goal of winning the Big Ten Championships this year and qualifying to compete at Regionals. With 11 meets scheduled this season, only four are against conference teams. But unlike most sports, gymnastics’ open scheduling holds no weighted value on the in-conference meets.Coach Carey Fagan said conference coaches are split on their opinion of doing a conference schedule in the future. Fagan is in favor of the conference schedule because she values the opportunity to directly compare teams within the conference on a one-on-one basis throughout the season.“I think it’s one of the advantages of being part of a large conference,” Fagan said, “to be able to compete within your conference and build the strength of the conference among the teams within that. Perception wise, that one-time competition is not a lot of opportunity for an upset.”While the current system only has the Buckeyes competing against four Big Ten teams during the regular season, Fagan thinks the opportunity for more one-on-one competition among the conference members benefits everyone.“I think it’s more of a perception among the judges and your other conference opponents that winning a meet in your conference is always a big deal,” Fagan said. “Not just for your win-loss, but also for your perception of your team in terms of comparing it to the rest of the conference.”Last year, the Buckeyes placed fifth out of seven teams. Sophomore Taylor Jones said the Big Ten usually posts some pretty tough competition, but she thinks OSU has a shot.“Michigan is usually high, Penn State’s high, Illinois is good,” Jones said. “But there’s no reason we shouldn’t be in the top three too, so we’ll see.”With 12 girls on the team, and only six completely healthy gymnasts, Jones said it left the Buckeyes off balance at the beginning of the season.“We had a rough start. We were up and down and what not, but I still think we have a shot,” Jones said. “We have plenty of time [and] attitudes have a changed a little bit. We’re really trying to pick each other up and motivate each other.”Senior gymnast Hilary Dow said the team’s goals have not changed, despite the setback of injuries, but the team had to make some changes.“I think our goals are still to win Big Ten’s and to qualify for Nationals,” Dow said. “But I guess with adjustments we’ve had to be more focused, make sure everyone’s … ready to be in the gym when they’re in the gym, to prevent further injuries.Fagan said that the team’s showing in conference meets and the Big Ten Championship will help contribute to its overall score to qualify as one of the top 36 teams for Regionals. As long as the team is consistent and hits its routines, Fagan said she has no doubt they’ll be in contention for Regionals.“Our consistency has been lacking a little bit, and I think that’s in part [because of] people doing events they normally wouldn’t do [due to injuries],” Fagan said. “And I think as the season progresses and [the gymnasts] get more experience on those events, we’ll see an improved consistency and see our team score go up.”The Big Ten Championship will be the first time that all seven conference teams will compete against each conference member.“It’s the first opportunity where all seven teams are compared on the same floor on the same night in front of the same judges,” Fagan said. “It’s a great opportunity, a Championship meet, especially being able to host this year is going to be an advantage, we hope.”After losing to conference opponent Michigan State by less than three points on Jan. 30, the Buckeyes look to come back Saturday against conference opponent Iowa. While the Big Ten Championships do not play a role in directly determining who moves on to Regionals, Jones said it does help to boost individual and team scores before the 36 teams are determined.“After Big Ten’s it kind of puts your rankings in place and if you’re [one of] the top 36 teams you go on to Regionals. And then the top two teams at Regionals go onto Nationals,” Jones said about how the post-season competition works. “So Big Ten’s is like a start to Regionals and Nationals.”With seven meets left before the Big Ten Championships, the OSU women’s team looks to solidify its routines and work on consistency. Fagan said Big Ten’s will really give the team an opportunity to see where they stand side-by-side among everyone else within the conference.“I think all the Big Ten teams are comparable in terms of their scoring capabilities,” Fagan said. “The bottom line is whoever hits on any given night is going to win the meet … but we have the potential.”OSU will host the 2010 Big Ten Championships on March 27 at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Arena. NCAA Regionals follow on April 9. read more
After beating Florida State on Tuesday 58-44, the No. 2 Ohio State men’s basketball team finds itself 6-0. Beating the Seminoles gave the Buckeyes a second impressive victory in Florida. OSU pummeled the then-No. 9 Florida Gators in Gainesville, 93-75, on Nov.16. With four returning starters from last season’s run to the Sweet 16 and one of the most highly touted freshman classes in the country, the Buckeyes will expect to keep winning. But how long can it last? Despite its unblemished record, the team’s play is not without flaws, the most significant being inconsistent rebounding. And that’s with two starting post players, senior Dallas Lauderdale and freshman Jared Sullinger, who are 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-9, respectively. OSU is a dismal 93rd in the country with 38.7 rebounds per game. OSU managed only 17 boards against the Gators, the only ranked opponent the team has played. “We’re not going after the ball like we should, and a lot of that is my fault,” Sullinger said after the Buckeyes beat Miami (Ohio) on Friday. The role of another freshman, point guard Aaron Craft, will also have a substantial effect on the season. Craft, though not a starter on the depth chart, is fifth on the team in minutes. His ability to handle pressure will go far in determining how long the Buckeyes can keep a zero in the loss column. “I’ve been extremely pleased with what Aaron had brought to the table,” coach Thad Matta said after Friday’s win. “He’s actually surprised me, just his understanding, his savvy.” With a freshman at point, expect teams to try to disrupt OSU with a zone press defense. That method proved effective for FSU and gave OSU problems against Morehead State on Nov. 23. “We were pathetic tonight at drawing something up in a timeout, going out, and then guys couldn’t see it through,” Matta said after the game against Morehead. “Those are the things you’ve got to get better at.” That type of play has led to 13 turnovers per game, compared to 11 per game last season. “That’s really unacceptable for us to turn it over and to keep making the same turnovers over and over again,” senior Jon Diebler said after the Miami game. Quality teams take advantage of teams that are sloppy with the ball. The Buckeyes, however, play far from a quality schedule. Before entering Big Ten Conference play Dec. 31, the Buckeyes will face one team now above .500 — 5-1 South Carolina — whom OSU will play in Columbus. The team plays Indiana and Iowa on the road to start league play. Those teams finished ninth and 10th in the conference last season, respectively. OSU could be 14-0 when the No. 15 Minnesota Golden Gophers come to Columbus on Jan. 9. The Bucks’ next challenge will be on the road against No. 20 Illinois, which they follow with a home contest against No. 18 Purdue on Jan. 25. If they come through those contests with a clean slate, the Buckeyes would be 21-0. The last team to play a perfect season was the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, with a 32-0 record. The Buckeyes will likely not match that feat, but the zero in the loss column might hang around for a while. read more
Ohio State football continued its scheduling flurry, locking up its fourth home-and-home series in less than a month by securing contests against Boston College for 2020 and 2021 on Wednesday. The Buckeyes will host the Eagles at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 19, 2020, before traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Sept. 18, 2021. OSU athletic director Gene Smith called BC “a fine program from an outstanding conference.” “This gives Ohio State fans a chance to watch their Buckeyes in back-to-back games against Pacific 12 and (Atlantic Coast Conference) schools,” Smith said in a released statement. BC athletic director Brad Bates said the matchups against OSU serve as a way for the Eagles to gauge themselves against one of the nation’s best teams. “This will be a great opportunity for our team to measure itself against one of the premier programs in college football,” Bates said in a released statement. The Buckeyes are 3-0 against BC and haven’t played the school since a 38-6 win at the Kickoff Classic at the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1995. Over the course of those three games, OSU outscored BC, 103-45. The Buckeyes will also face Oregon in 2020 and 2021, after locking in a home-and-home series with the Ducks on Oct. 23. On Oct. 10, OSU announced a rematch against Texas for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The flurry of schedule additions began on Oct. 2, when the Buckeyes agreed to a home-and-home series with Texas Christian University for 2018 and 2019. OSU is a combined 16-3-1 against BC, Oregon, Texas and TCU. The Buckeyes continue play in the 2012 season Saturday against Illinois at 3:30 p.m. in Ohio Stadium. read more

For the new Poland national team manager, the game against Italy will be useful to restart his country’s ambitions in international footballPoland had a very awful run in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The European nation lost 2-1 against Senegal and then was defeated 3-0 by Colombia. The team only got one victory and it was against Japan 1-0 after the squad was already eliminated from Group H.And now the future of Polish football is in the hands of coach Jerzy Brzeczek, who will debut against Italy in the UEFA Nations League.Serie A Betting: Match-day 3 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Considering there is a number of perfect starts so early in the Serie A season, as well as a few surprisingly not-so perfect ones….“It is my first game and we will start a new chapter with some new people,” Brzeczek told reporters as echoed by Football Italia.“It will be interesting to play against Italy, as both teams are in a similar situation. Poland did not do as well as people expected at the World Cup, and Italy – a giant of world football – did not qualify at all.”“Aside from final tournaments, I cannot remember Poland getting to play big teams as often [as in the Nations League]. It is a good test which will show immediately whether my choices are the right ones,” he added.“I want to see how much we have grown. Italy is the favorite going into this game, but we have no fear. I want us to play with humility and determination.”“I won’t look at the past. We have a lot of potential in this squad and we must concentrate on the present,” he concluded. read more
While ZDM CFO Andy Johns declined comment, multiple sources say the sale was an ad play for j2.”It’s pretty clear the ZDM sale was not predicated so much on the legacy media brands, but much more so on the ad network that [CEO] Vivek [Shah] established along with the clever targeting capabilities he developed for consumer tech buyers,” according to a knowledgeable industry source. “The valuation on ZDM is stunning–it’s the difference between marketing a digital pure-play business and one that was perceived to be a traditional media house.”No reports of possible reorganization or future plans for ZDM brands–including PCMag.com, ComputerShopper, ExtremeTech, Geek.com, ZiffDavis B2B and ad targeting platform BuyerBase–had surfaced as of Monday afternoon.Launched just under two years ago, BuyerBase collects, stores and analyzes real-time audience data to provide targeted advertisements based on user behavior. The ZDM sale was kept quiet until today according to a source with intimate knowledge of the market, and comes just two years after former Time Inc. digital group president Vivek Shah and investment firm Great Hill Partners (GHP) joined to purchase ZDM in June of 2010. Terms of that deal were not disclosed, although the source estimates the deal was likely between $40 and $60 million. GHP says it targets equity investments of $30 to $150 million with a holding period of three to seven years.Ziff Davis, which currently reaches over 50 million in-market buyers every month, split and sold its Ziff Davis Enterprise (ZDE) division to Insight Venture Partners in 2007 for $150 million. ZDE was then sold to lead-gen firm QuinStreet in February of this year, resulting in massive layoffs.Following the 2007 split, ZDM was one of the first media companies to file for bankruptcy in March of 2008. Emerging that summer with a deleveraged balance sheet, ZDM then shuttered or sold each of its remaining print brands to go digital-only in early 2009.The j2 purchase is the latest in a line of precipitous drops for Ziff Davis since it stood at the top of the tech media world in the late-1990s.While j2 expects to add $60 million in revenues for 2013 as a result of the acquisition, Ziff Davis was generating 10-times that a little more than decade ago-in FY1999, the company produced $535 million. Two years later it was down to $430 million, and by 2002, earnings had fallen to $209 million. Revenues in its last full year before separating, 2006, were $181 million.j2 Global provides cloud-based individual and business messaging services through brands eFax, Onebox, eVoice, Campaigner, Fusemail, KeepItSafe and CampaignerCRM In its Q3 statement, j2 reported an 8.4-percent increase in revenues (up to $93.2 million) and an EBITDA of $50.5 million. The 1.0-percent growth missed analyst projections by just 0.1 percent, Shaw notes. Earlier reports say the development will pick up through the next two years, with forecasts of 2.1- and 3.2-percent improvement in 2014 and 2015, respectively.See also: A Trade Show Industry Outlook for 2013 Attendance—a leading indicator—supports those estimates. Professional attendance increased 5.8 percent in Q4, the biggest jump in that category since 2007. Revenue (up 3.6 percent) and exhibitors (up 3.0 percent) also saw improvement, while net square footage declined less than 1 percent.By sector, machinery and finished business inputs shows enjoyed the strongest performance last year, up 6.9 percent by CEIR’s aggregate measure. Food (5.0 percent), sporting goods, travel and amusement (2.8) and business services (2.6) also had gains. Conversely, government events suffered a 6.1-percent loss at the hands of sequestration and budget reforms.”This was not surprising since the industry was negatively affected by government budget cuts impacting trade shows,” says Brian Casey, CEIR’s president and CEO. The trade show industry closed 2013 on an upswing after a year of sustained, but marginal, growth. The business grew 3.0 percent in the fourth quarter and 1.0 percent for the year, according to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research. CEIR measures overall industry performance using an aggregate formula that accounts for net square footage, exhibitors, attendance and revenue. The gains marked the 14th-consecutive quarter of growth for trade shows and the best three-month period since Q1 of 2012. “We are confident in the continued growth and progress of the industry,” says CEIR’s economist Allen Shaw. “The exhibition industry has survived and emerged from the Great Recession and we are confident that the upswing will continue.” read more
Deepika Padukone, Kangana RanautVarinder ChawlaAfter Kangana Ranaut opted out of Anurag Basu’s next film Imli, reports claimed that Deepika Padukone is likely to bag the movie. It has been reported that Anurag initially wanted Kangana to play the female lead in the film, but now he has approached Deepika with the offer.”Kangana Ranaut had walked out of filmmaker Anurag Basu’s forthcoming movie Imli citing difference in opinion. As the two of them couldn’t reunite after Gangster and Life In A Metro, the filmmaker has now approached Deepika Padukone to play the lead role in the film. As Deepika is busy with Chhapaak, the conversations between the filmmaker and the actress have been more than positive,” Bollywood Hungama quoted a source as saying.Although the report stated that Kangana and Anurag’s deal could not be finalised due to “difference in opinion”, the director had earlier said that the actress could not take it up as she had a packed schedule for Manikarnika and now her upcoming film Panga. It is to be mentioned, Kangana had made her debut with Anurag’s romantic thriller Gangster.Meanwhile, Kangana has another anticipated upcoming film Mental Hai Kya starring Rajkummar Rao. The makers of the film were recently in trouble after some organisations had raised objection with the title, which they felt is insensitive towards people who suffer from mental illness. On the other side, Deepika will next be seen in Chhapaak, which is based on the real-story of an acid-attack survivor. read more
US Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain (R-AZ) smiles as he speaks during a rally in La Crosse, Wisconsin on 10 October 2008. Reuters File PhotoUS Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who ran unsuccessfully for president as a self-styled maverick Republican in 2008 and became a prominent critic of president Donald Trump, died on Saturday, his office said.He was 81.McCain, a US senator from Arizona for over three decades, had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, discovered by his doctors in July 2017, and had not been at the US Capitol in 2018. He also had surgery for an intestinal infection in April of this year. His family had announced on Friday that McCain was discontinuing further cancer treatment.A statement from his office said: “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on 25 August 2018. With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”No further details were immediately provided.“My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years,” Cindy McCain wrote on Twitter. “He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.”Alternatively affable and cantankerous, McCain had been in the public eye since the 1960s, when as a naval aviator he was shot down during the Vietnam War and tortured by his North Vietnamese communist captors during 5-1/2 years as a prisoner. He was edged out by George W Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, but became his party’s White House candidate eight years later. After gambling on political neophyte Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, McCain lost in 2008 to Democrat Barack Obama, who became the first black US president.McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was a frequent critic as well as a target of his fellow Republican, Trump, who was elected president in November 2016.McCain denounced Trump for among other things his praise of Russian president Vladimir Putin and other leaders the senator described as foreign “tyrants.”“Flattery secures his friendship, criticism his enmity,” McCain said of Trump in his memoir, “The Restless Wave,” which was released in May.McCain in July had castigated Trump for his summit with Putin, issuing a statement that called their joint news conference in Helsinki “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.” He said Trump was “not only unable but unwilling to stand up to Putin.”Sources close to McCain have said Trump would not be invited to the funeral.Shortly after McCain’s death was announced, Trump tweeted: My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain.”McCain, a foreign policy hawk with a traditional Republican view of world affairs, was admired in both parties for championing civility and compromise during an era of acrid partisanship in US politics. But he also had a famous temper and rarely shied away from a fight. He had several with Trump.Thumbs-DownHe was the central figure in one of the most dramatic moments in Congress of Trump’s presidency when he returned to Washington shortly after his brain cancer diagnosis for a middle-of-the-night Senate vote in July 2017.Still bearing a black eye and scar from surgery, McCain gave a thumbs-down signal in a vote to scuttle a Trump-backed bill that would have repealed the Obamacare healthcare law and increased the number of Americans without health insurance by millions.Trump was furious about McCain’s vote and frequently referred to it at rallies, but without mentioning McCain by name. After Trump in 2015 launched his presidential campaign, McCain condemned his hard-line rhetoric on illegal immigration and said Trump had “fired up the crazies.” Trump retorted that McCain was “not a war hero,” adding: “I like people who weren’t captured.”After Trump became president, McCain blasted what he called the president’s attempts to undermine the free press and rule of law, and lamented the “half-baked, spurious nationalism” of the Trump era.McCain denounced Trump’s performance at a summit meeting with Putin in July as “a tragic mistake,” adding, “The damage inflicted by president Trump’s naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate.”Mccain Vs ObamaMcCain, the son and grandson of US Navy admirals, was elected to the US House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 after more than two decades of Navy service. He served four years in the House before Arizona voters elected him to the Senate in 1986 to replace Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican presidential nominee revered by conservatives. In running for president in 2008, McCain tried to succeed an unpopular fellow Republican in Bush, who was leaving office with the country mired in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and stuck in a financial crisis. It was a stark contrast between McCain, then a 72-year-old veteran of the Washington establishment, and the 47-year-old Obama, who was offering a “Yes, we can” message of change.McCain tried to inject some youth and enthusiasm into his campaign with his selection of Palin, Alaska’s governor, as his running mate. But the choice backfired as her political inexperience and shaky performances in media interviews raised concerns about her qualifications. In his new book, McCain voiced regret for not choosing then-Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat turned independent, as his running mate.McCain wrote that he had originally settled on Lieberman, Democrat Al Gore’s running mate in the 2000 election, but was warned by Republican leaders that Lieberman’s views on social issues, including support for abortion rights, would “fatally divide” the party.“It was sound advice that I could reason for myself,” McCain wrote. “But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had.”Obama won 53 per cent of the vote to McCain’s 45.6 per cent.War InjuriesDuring the Vietnam War, McCain flew attack planes off aircraft carriers. He was preparing for a bombing run in 1967 when a missile inadvertently fired from another plane hit his fuel tanks, triggering a fatal explosion and fire. He suffered shrapnel wounds.A few months later on 26 October 1967, McCain’s A-4 Skyhawk was shot down on a bombing mission over North Vietnam’s capital and he suffered two broken arms and a broken leg in the crash. A mob then dragged him from a lake, broke his shoulder and stabbed him.Held at the notorious “Hanoi Hilton” prison and other sites, McCain was beaten and tortured, suffering broken bones and dysentery. He was released on 14 March 1973 but was left with permanent infirmities. In Congress, McCain built a generally conservative record, opposing abortion and advocating higher defence spending. He supported Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq and criticised Obama for not doing more to intervene in Syria’s civil war.Still, he prided himself on his reputation as a maverick and had a history of working across party lines on immigration, climate change and campaign finance reform. He also spoke out against the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding, a torture technique that simulates drowning, and other harsh interrogation tactics on detainees in the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks. He urged the closure of the prison for foreign terrorism suspects at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and also sponsored an anti-torture measure that passed Congress in 2005.In a 2002 memoir, McCain wrote, “I’m an independent-minded, well-informed public servant to some. And to others, I’m a self-styled, self-righteous maverick pain in the ass.”John Sidney McCain III was born on 29 August 1936, at an American naval installation in the Panama Canal Zone – US territory at the time – when his father was stationed there. He conceded he was a “smart ass” during his years at the US Naval Academy and graduated fifth from the bottom of his class.McCain divorced his wife Carol after 15 years of marriage in 1980 and weeks later married the former Cindy Henley, daughter of a wealthy beer distributor in Arizona.A dark period for McCain came as one of the “Keating Five” group of senators accused of improperly intervening with federal regulators to help political contributor and bank executive Charles Keating, whose Lincoln Savings and Loan failed in 1989 at a cost to taxpayers of $3.4 billion.McCain was cleared of wrongdoing in 1991, but the Senate Ethics Committee rebuked him for poor judgment. On 25 July 2017, McCain delivered a Senate floor speech not long after his cancer diagnosis that was widely seen as his farewell address. It included a call to fellow Republicans to stand up to Trump and for all lawmakers to work together to keep America as a “beacon of liberty” in the world.“That is the cause that binds us and is so much more powerful and worthy than the small differences that divide us,” McCain said. read more

Officials claimed it was no longer ‘fit and proper’ to hold a private hire licence due to ‘public safety and security implications’. But last Friday’s announcement could have wider implications if other authorities follow suit. With 47 Uber drivers in Stoke-on-Trent, should the same thing happen here? Sharaz Yaqub, chairman of Stoke-on-Trent Private Hire Association welcomed TFL’s decision because he believes it should be a ‘fair playing field’ for all private hire companies. He said: “They should have the same stringent checks that other companies have to go through. “I think Stoke-on-Trent City Council should do the same here. I see Uber drivers that aren’t licensed to Stoke-on-Trent, so the council don’t know their background. Read MoreStoke-on-Trent cabbie hit with fine – after picking up passengers in Stafford “It gives local drivers a bad name and it tarnishes us all with the same brush.” But he believes the company hasn’t had a ‘massive impact’ locally. “We have firms in Stoke-on-Trent who have been established for 30 years and the drivers are doing a great job,” he said. “Private hire firms locally are cheaper than Uber anyway. Customers are well aware of this and I am delighted about that.” Uber has lost its licence to operate in London Asmann Ul-Haq, proprietor of Autocabs Private Hire, described it as a ‘good decision’ by TFL. He said: “There has been issues with cross-border hiring and conditions for drivers. They should never have been granted the licence in the first place. “I think the city council should get rid of them as well. I don’t see how they can justify charging the prices that they do – they are taking advantage of customers. “I think the cross-border hiring should be stopped. silent on Saturdays shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown for 72 hours until delivering brief comments at a local community meeting Tuesday evening But his pleas for prayer and patience went unheeded as violence and the heavy-handed police response escalated Rubber bullets and tear gas were aimed at mostly peaceful protesters as law enforcement officers armed in tactical gear aimed a fine governor and Im confident that working together hes going to be able to communicate his desire to make sure that justice is done and his desire to make sure that public safety is maintained in an appropriate way" the President said Nixon had long been seen to have national ambitions declining to rule out a presidential run in 2016 as recently as February Democratic operatives had seen him Manchester United gave Manchester City a warning sign of what is to come next season United defender Chris Smalling believes after the Red Devils’ incredible comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 City would have sealed the Premier League title with victory against their local rivals and are still well-set to win the league for a fifth time as they boast a 13-point lead over United with six games to go Chris Smalling scored the winner for Manchester United in the derby against City AP However by fighting back United consolidated their place in second four points clear of Liverpool and sent a message that they can compete with City next season United also still have a shot at silverware when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals in two weeks’ time "It’s about making sure that we can stand up tall against our rivals" Smalling told MUTV "This is definitely sending out a marker for the rest of the season and beyond We’ve got some great objectives "Making sure we own that second spot and the fact that obviously we’ve got Tottenham in a semi-final is a great reward in that competition We need to make sure we get to that final" United’s fightback was kickstarted by Paul Pogba silencing his critics after a deeply disappointing season by scoring twice in two minutes just after half-time Pogba has often been dropped by Jose Mourinho for United’s biggest games despite costing a then world record 89 million (102m euros $125m) in 2016 And United’s other marquee signing of the Mourinho era Alexis Sanchez also came good after a poor start to his time at Old Trafford by setting up Pogba’s second and Smalling’s winner "Alexis is always looking to try and thread those balls and Paul’s runs are a danger to any team" added Smalling "It’s good that they’ve been able to link in together It’s a great great turnaround" Smalling has now scored three times against City in Manchester derbies However he acknowledged he was especially relieved to net the winner 21 minutes from time after being outmuscled by City captain Vincent Kompany for the hosts’ opening goal "I think there’s no better feeling than to score that winner in a derby and obviously make up for the first
