India’s three national exchanges stunned the investing world on a Friday night in February when they jointly announced they were going to cut ties with their foreign counterparts. This was effectively an attack on offshore hubs like Singapore and Dubai and raised questions about how India fits in with global finance. Investors warned that the standing of one of the world’s biggest emerging markets in global indexes could be in jeopardy.Read it at Bloomberg Related Items

By Saumojyoti S ChoudhuryBhubaneswar, Dec 3 (PTI) PR Sreejeshs decision to play in Virat Kohlis charity football match might have raised a few eyebrows but Indias premier hockey goalkeeper might well just get away with a reprieve, at least this time.Indian hockey teams regular captain Sreejesh played a Celebrity Clasico in October this year in Mumbai, featuring the countrys top sports and Bollywood stars, including India cricket captain Virat and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.During that period Srejeesh was on a break but what went against him was that he was recuperating from a serious injury that time after being sidelined from the national team following the Azlan Shah Cup in May earlier this year. There were reports that Sreejeshs action didnt go down well with the team management but he might just get away as Hockey India is yet to initiate any disciplinary action against him.”Yes, it came to our notice but we didnt initiate any disciplinary action as yet. We are currently busy with the Hockey World League Final and disciplinary meeting has been called,” Hockey India CEO Elena Norman, who is also a member of the Disciplinary Committee, told PTI.Another member of the Disciplinary Committee is completely in dark about the issue and said he only came to know about the matter when contacted today.”Its news to me. I only came to know about the matter today. I am not aware of any Disciplinary Committee meeting. I havent been told anything by Hockey India as yet. Any progress on this matter will take place, if it has to, only after the Hockey World League Final,” said the senior member of the committee.advertisementConsidered as the best in his business, Sreejesh has been the backbone of Indian hockey since his debut and his brilliance under the bar won India many matches, which includes the 2014 Asian Games gold in Incheon. In May this year, Sreejesh had torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia and since then he has been out of the side. India is desperately hoping for Sreejesh to recover soon especially with a busy 2018 lined up.But Sreejeshs action is in serious breach of Hockey Indias Code of Conduct and he faces the risk of four months suspension.”Sreejesh is a role model for young hockey players and his actions will leave an impact on them. Even though I dont know whose permission he took to play in the match just when he was recovering an injury, I feel he should have avoided it thinking about his own and nations cause,” the Disciplinary Committee member, said.”Having said that he never had any disciplinary issues in the past, so I feel he will escape with a warning. India need Sreejesh services.”But the big question which is making round is that just whose permission did Indias premier goalkeeper take to play in the Celebrity Classico.”Sreejesh didnt ask Hockey India before playing in the match. We dont have anything on record,” the HI CEO said.”He might have taken permission from his coaches, physio or the High Performance Manager,” she said.High Performance Manager David John, however, said he was not approached by Sreejesh.”I was not asked. During that period I was not in India. I was with the team in Dhaka for the Asia Cup,” John said. When contacted, Sreejesh refused to comment on the issue.”I wont like to comment anything on the issue. We will talk later,” he said before disconnecting the phone. PTI SSC ATK ATK read more
U17 World Cup How the India U17 World Cup team members were scouted? Ashwin Muralidharan Last updated 2 years ago 19:30 10/5/17 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Anselm Noronha/Goal U17 World Cup India U17 The country’s hopes will be pinned on the 21 boys in the India U17 team but how were they unearthed? The FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017, which kicks off on October 6th, is a spectacle the country of India has been anticipating for a long time now. Not only is it the first time the country is hosting a FIFA tournament but it also meant that India get to participate in their first ever World Cup across all age groups. Ever since the tournament’s hosting right was awarded to India, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been striving to ensure the team that represents India in the tournament will be an outfit capable of standing toe-to-toe with the global giants of the game. As starters, German coach Nicolai Adam was put in charge of the team in 2015. Following which, the scouting team of the AIFF, led by former India international Abhishek Yadav along with Nicolai Adam, identified and put together some of the best young talents in the country to ensure they are given the best training and facilities till the World Cup. There were changes to the group as time went on and also with the coach parting ways earlier this year. Former Benfica youth coach Luis Norton de Matos came in and made some tweaks to the squad, took them on exposure trips to Europe and Central America before the final list of 21 players were announced recently. How did AIFF manage to unearth the 21 lads who will don the national team colours in the global event next month? It has to be noted that the AIFF’s scouting team conducted several trials all over the country and cherrypicked the best from the India U14 national team. Now, let’s take a look at how each of the squad members came to be a part of the elite group: Two of the lads were scouted from the trials conducted at Mumbai in 2015. Those who caught the eye of Nicolai Adam and Abhishek Yadav in Mumbai were star striker Aniket Jadhav and full-back Hendry Antonay. Midfielder Nonthoinganba Meetei was identified during the trials held in Manipur while Lalengmawia (midfielder) was picked up during the trials held in neighbouring Mizoram. Several of the boys were already a part of the AIFF’s Elite academy and were handpicked from the team. Defender Jitendra Singh (first identified during the 2013 U14 national football championship), midfielder Abhijit Sarkar, goalkeepers Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem and Prabhsukhan Singh Gill were all part of the academy and were selected from there. Defender Boris Singh was also scouted into the AIFF Elite academy during the U14 national football championships, where he led Manipur to the title. Midfielder Rahul Kannoly Praveen was also a part of the academy but was let go to train with the Under-19 squad before being inducted into the U17 team. Three of them announced themselves with their performance in the 2015 Under-16 National Football Championship in Kolkata – Sikkim Komal Thatal (midfielder), Manipur’s Suresh Singh Wangjam (midfielder) and West Bengal’s Rahim Ali (forward). Team captain Amarjit Singh Kiyam (midfielder) and Sanjeev Stalin (defender) were scouted in 2015 from the Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) after making a name for themselves there. They were scouted when the CFA team was in Goa and Stalin was a part of the ‘B’ team initially before Adam promoted him to the first team. Four members of the squad came to be a part of the team after impressive performances for Minerva Punjab in the U16 I-League final against Ozone FC. Thereafter, they were called for practice games against the India U17 and U15 teams in Goa, where they shone through. Star midfielder Jackson Singh Thaunaojam, defender Anwar Ali, forward Nongdamba Naorem and midfielder Mohammad Shahjahan were the four who made it into the team. It is worth noting that Shahjahan and Anwar Ali were initially a part of the AIFF Elite academy before being let go in 2015. Another one of Abhishek Yadav’s brainchild, the Overseas Scouting Project (OSP) which was implemented in association with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), helped bring Namit Deshpande into the fold. Though the US-based defender could not be convinced to join the team in 2016 by Nicolai Adam, he would be brought into the team in May 2017 by Luis Norton de Matos. Canada-born goalkeeper Sunny Dhaliwal’s journey to the India U17 is a storied one. Since he did not have a valid Indian passport, his father sent videos of his skills to Abhishek Yadav, who invited him for trials. After impressing Luis Norton de Matos, the AIFF and SAI worked in tandem to procure an Indian passport for the strapping lad and ultimately a spot in the U17 World Cup team. read more
Transfers Lewandowski will stay at Bayern and surpass my goal record, says Heynckes Joe Wright 20:55 3/30/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Bongarts Transfers Real Madrid Bayern München v Borussia Dortmund Bayern München Bundesliga Robert Lewandowski Las Palmas v Real Madrid Primera División Real Madrid’s reported interest in the Poland international is not altering the German club’s thought process regarding the striker’s future Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes expects Robert Lewandowski to stay at the club for long enough to move above him in the all-time Bundesliga goalscoring charts.Lewandowski continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid at the end of the season, despite Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insisting the striker is not for sale.Heynckes has dismissed the transfer talk as mere speculation and has tipped the Poland star, who has 174 goals in Germany’s top flight, to move beyond his tally of 220 in the coming seasons. Former LTTE supporter Nalini Sriharan, undergoing life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has again moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu Government to consider her representation for premature release.Nalini, now confined in the Special Prison for women in Vellore, submitted that she has undergone imprisonment for more than 24 years, the Press Trust of India reported. She submitted Tamil Nadu government has framed a scheme of premature release of life convicts who had completed 20 years of actual imprisonment. A Government Order was also passed on Novedmber 10, 1994 even under which she was not considered for release, she said.Claiming that she is eligible to be considered for premature release under this scheme, Nalini submitted that she had made a representation on October 22, 2014 to the state government to consider her premature release but government was yet to decide on the representation. She sought a direction from the court to decide on her representation within a reasonable time.Nalini was sentenced to death by the trial court in the case on January 28, 1998. Her sentence was commuted to life term by the Tamil Nadu Governor on April 24, 2000. Stating that about 2,200 life convicts who had served 10 years of sentence had been released by Tamil Nadu, she said it had not considered her release on the ground that her case falls under a different section of Code of criminal procedure. She was first awarded death sentence, which was confirmed by the Supreme Court and subsequently Tamil Nadu government under Article 161 of the Constitution commuted her sentence to life on April 24 2000. read more
by The Canadian Press Posted Apr 4, 2013 9:47 am MDT Lack of innovation holding Canada back, says Conference Board report AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email OTTAWA – The Conference Board says Canada has been spinning its wheels in the critical area of business innovation despite a decade of trying. The Ottawa-based think-tank says its latest comparison of 16 advanced economies puts Canada in 13th place on innovation, a key element of a modern, competitive economy. The report, being released Thursday morning, says Canada ranks second last in two important aspects of the overall innovation record, the amount businesses spend on research and development and in venture capital expenditures.Ironically, the research shows Canada does well in the quality of its scientific research and the creation of new businesses.“But these signs of promise are not being turned into commercially viable products and services, and successful, globally-competitive companies are not emerging from our creative ideas,” says Daniel Muzyka, the think-tank’s chief executive. The Conference Board notes that the federal government has placed great emphasis in improving Canada’s innovation performance for years, most directly in the 2012 budget’s revamping of how $3.5 billion is doled out to firms under the Scientific Research and Experimental Development program. Last month’s budget also set aside about $200 million for venture firms.Muzyka gives some credit to government, but says the problem has not been resolved. For instance, business spending on research and development has actually dropped to 0.89 per cent of gross domestic product in 2011 from 1.29 per cent 10 years earlier. By comparison, U.S. firms spend twice as much comparatively, and Finnish firms three times.Governments do better on R&D spending, ranking eighth in the 16-nation comparison.“We have now reached a point where we are seriously impacting the wealth and opportunities for following generations,” Muzyka says. The report is part of the Conference Board’s “How Canada Performs” series, which are released separately. In March, the think-tank found that Canada was sixth among the nations for economic performance. read more
Child sexual abuse is an abhorrent crime, and we have robust procedures in place to protect cadetsMinistry of Defence An MOD spokesman said: “Child sexual abuse is an abhorrent crime, and we have robust procedures in place to protect cadets. This includes all adults who work with children undergoing mandatory security and background checks, rigorous disclosure procedures and regular safeguarding training. We encourage anyone who has been a victim, or knows someone who has, to report it to the police.” One victim identified only as Martin said he was 12 when he was “systematically abused and raped repeatedly over many years” by his commanding officer Brian Leonard, at Tennal Grange cadet base in Birmingham. He told the programme: “You are trained to follow orders and you are trained to respect the officers and do as they tell you.”That includes having to lie on the floor on a dirty blanket and just lie there and… take it like a man.”The programme spoke to 10 men who were abused by Leonard in the 1980s.Martin said: “The thing was it was so blatantly obvious, it was almost as if it was hidden in full sight.”A girlfriend of one of the victims threatened to report Leonard to the police in 1987, but cadet officers pressured her to keep quiet. The sergeant said he would take a statement from her, but warned her not to approach the police. No investigation into Leonard was ever carried out. He died in 1996, having never faced justice.Another victim, identified only as Tony’ was 14 when he joined Cheshunt Sea Cadets, in Hertfordshire, in 1979. He alleged he was abused by his commanding officer Alan Waters on a weekend trip away. Don’t miss: Panorama – Cadet Abuse Cover-Up on Tuesday 4th July at 22:45 and afterwards on BBC iPlayer https://t.co/c0pd2okvwj pic.twitter.com/SnzfiXEUnM— Panorama 🌐 (@BBCPanorama) July 3, 2017 Lawyers representing victims of the abuse claimed the scale was likely to rival scandals in the Catholic Church and the Jimmy Savile case. The Army, Air and Sea Cadets are between them one of Britain’s largest youth groups and are responsible for nearly 130,000 children in more than 3,000 clubs across the country.Former cadets who said they had been abused in the 1980s told the programme that when their parents or loved ones raised concerns, they were urged not to tell the police. To date the Ministry of Defence has paid out over £2 million to victims of the abuse. Terrified of returning, he told his parents, whose complaints led to a home visit from two Sea Cadet officers, in full uniform.Tony’s parents were dissuaded from approaching the police by the officers, as this could lead to the closure of the groups. In return for not taking matters further, they were promised that Waters would be moved from looking after children. But Waters was just moved to another division of sea cadets in North London, where another instructor raised concern. The Royal Navy captain in charge of all the sea cadet corps responded that the allegations against Waters were “thoroughly investigated – and not proved.”In 2006 Waters was found guilty in Mumbai of raping and abusing boys at an orphanage run by his naval friend, Duncan Grant. Two years later they won an appeal, which was later quashed.Waters returned to the UK in 2012 and made to sign the sex offenders register. Despite this until March 2017 he still held a position in a naval veteran’s organisation – Honorary Secretary of HMS President Retired Officers Association.Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed police have investigated 282 allegations of abuse in the past five years and 99 instructors have been dismissed. David McClenaghan, head of law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp’s abuse department representing victims said: “I have absolutely no doubts that the abuse in the cadets will mirror the other scandals like the Jimmy Savile case, like the abuse in the Scouts, like abuse in the Catholic Church.” Almost 100 cadet force instructors have been dismissed in the past five years after allegations of sex abuse and leaders repeatedly tried to cover up past allegations, an investigation has found.Parents of cadets who had been abused were encouraged not to go to the police as cadet organisations tried to hush up the accusations, it is alleged.A total of 363 sexual abuse allegations, both current and historic, have been made across the Army, Air and Sea cadet forces since 2012, according to a seven-month BBC Panorama investigation. We’ve already highlighted some of the top holiday gaming picks for the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. Now it’s time to take a look at the third major player in the console wars–the PlayStation 3. AdChoices广告Not surprisingly, a number of the top holiday games on the PS3 also appear on the Xbox 360 list. Sony does have a few exclusives, however, including the latest Gran Turismo and the PlayStation Move, the company’s attempt at a Wii-killer. Gran Turismo 5The PlayStation’s flagship racing series finally makes its PS3 debut with the fifth entry in the series. The title is a worthy new installment for the popular series, thanks to heavy customization, a wide variety of car choices, and really solid driving physics. Call of Duty: Black OpsThis first-person shooter is easily the biggest game of the year, if not ever. Really. It blew past previous records for entertainment sales — not video game sales, entertainment sales. The game made $360 million in its first 24 hours in North America alone. That’s just crazy. The Call of Duty: World at War sequel has also been garnering strong reviews for its portrayal of Cold War battles.Assassin’s CreedThis third installment in the popular Ubisoft series returns the players to Italy for more wall-scaling action. Brotherhood deepens the already dense plot with additional timelines, 15 playable characters, and a new multiplayer mode. Arguably the best reviewed game of the year, the game was met with nearly universal acclaim when it launched last month.PlayStation MoveOkay, it’s a controller, not a game, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include the PlayStation Move. At present, the motion controller doesn’t really have a killer app, but it’s still likely to be the hottest PlayStation accessory this holiday season. Sony is selling a bundle for the peripheral featuring a number of game demos, including Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Echochrome II, EyePet, Kung Fu Rider, and Sports Champions.VanquishBattle over natural resources! Rescue scientists! Shoot lots and lots of guns! This cool third-person shooter puts you in Sam Gideon’s Augmented Reaction Suit in a battle against, who else, the Russians.Castlevania: Lords of ShadowThis reboot of the perennial favorite supernatural action series puts you right in the middle of the action. Taking place in the year 1047, you’ll battle vampires, werewolves, and the like, in an attempt to save your mortal pals. read more
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales (GOCNSW) voted in biannual elections last weekend, returning 13 of the previous committee to the board and welcoming seven new members. None of the ten candidates who ran on a united ‘renewal and rejuvenation’ ticket were able to muster enough votes to get a place on the board. Of 2547 members eligible to vote, 1843 exercised their democratic right. But as has been the case in the past, only a minority of members – 323, voted in person. The election result was largely determined by 1520 proxy votes. President Harry Danalis, who was re-elected with over 1400 votes, told Neos Kosmos that he defended the organisation’s voting system. “Every time we have an election, something that is given to us by law is criticised as unfair, the law says we’re entitled to use proxies, and the fact is members take the opportunity to vote by proxy. “It’s been a long tradition that we use proxies. Previous presidents have tried to see if there’s a way to stop their use, but we’ve had barristers’ opinions, and they say you can’t stop their use”. With allegations by some GOCNSW members that proxies are overly influencing election results, Mr Danalis backed the organisation’s ability to deal with potential abuses of the system. “From time to time we do get complaints, and they’re examined by the election committee. If the committee believes something is not right, they ring up the member in question, but obviously you can’t ring up 1500 members. “Where there are suspicions, where there are complaints, checks are done.” Mr Danalis, who shortly after the election was re-elected as president, appealed to all members to “work in harmony” particularly in relation to reconciliation with the Archdiocese. “I ask everyone now to accept the decision of the July AGM regarding reconciliation so that it is implemented properly. There will be bumps along the road to iron out, but we don’t want provocations and confrontation.” The GOCNSW president said that the new committee’s work would include working to improve the Community’s assets and relocating the organisation’s office and members’ facilities. The 20 members elected to the GOCNSW committee last weekend are: Panagiota Avramidis, Christos Belerhras, Dimitris Bekris, Harry Danalis, Peter Doukas, Peter Delimitros, George Diamataris, Ula George, Chris Georgopoulos, Christos Gravanis, Nia Karteris, Glen Kotopoulos, Gerassimos Lymberatos, Nicholas Malaxos, Constantinos Papanikitas, Sam Pappas, Alexandros Samaras, Mighael Tsilimos, Peter Tsilioris and Peter Τsintilas. read more
Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. What goes into making candy? Quality ingredients? A delicious recipe? What about 1,500 “thank yous” per minute, piped in over the speakers in the very factory responsible for making said candy? Apparently, that’s how confectioner Takeda Seika in Inuyama in Aichi Prefecture (Japan, of course) operates. Takeda sells Tamago Boro, tiny biscuits that are shaped like eggs – “egg biscuits.” Every day in the factory, workers hear the whir of machinery as well as a recording of a chorus of young children saying “thank you” over and over again. They’re saying it in Japanese: “arigato!” all day long. That’s supposed to help with morale, and help the company keep going, as 15 years ago the president decided that he wanted the candy itself to be reminded that kids continuing to buy the candy keeps them going. Thus, he recorded 50 children saying “arigato” and plays it on a loop. For fifteen years. That doesn’t particularly strike me as inspiring, though. It’s more than a little annoying, and dare I say it, creepy. No one, I mean no one, wants to hear a bunch of kids saying “thank you” that many times a day.Takeda calls their sweet goods as candy that’s heard “thank you” a million times, which isn’t even an exaggeration. The company has been in business since 1952, so you can calculate all the thank yous it’s heard (as well as the employees) since then. Imagine being one of the workers who have to bask in the hellish loop of children saying “thank you” all day, which is totally bizarre to start with. It looks like the company is doing well for itself, but that’s hardly saying anything if its employees have the potential to be driven insane simply by working there on a daily basis. Super weird. Repetition can drive anyone crazy. Stay on target Launchpad Blaze Postpones JAXA’s Cargo Ship Launch to ISSJapan’s Hayabusa-2 Probe Packs Up Space Rock Cargo From Asteroid Ryugu read more
CAMAS — Some people pass jewelry down to their sons or daughters. The Runyan family passed down a jewelry store. This Saturday, Runyan’s Jewelers third-generation owner Debbie Runyan-Parker will honor the store her grandfather opened in 1946 with an open house. Though she hopes to showcase the store’s offerings and its willingness to adapt, the event may also reintroduce people to its legacy of customer care.“The most important thing is to honor my grandparents and my parents and the graciousness they’ve taught me,” Runyan said. “It’s not about me. It’s about the store. It’s about what my family has taught and instilled in our DNA. When my customers walk in, it’s not what I want to sell them, it’s what they want.”Not to be confused with Erik Runyan Jewelers in downtown Vancouver, which is owned by another branch of the extended family, the Camas store opened in 1946. Founder Emerson Runyan relocated the business to the downtown area two years later. The open house, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will feature long-time owners Barbara and Paul Runyan. Many facetsRunyan-Parker, 56, took over for her parents in 1997 and business has changed quite a bit, she said. In the old days, the business boomed along with the Camas mill. As a young girl she recalled her parents welcoming workers who tromped into the store looking for watch repairs. The pervasive smell of the mill, they told their daughters, may as well be the smell of money.“As long as that mill was in business, we were in business,” she said they would say.The mill’s production and workforce has waned, she said, and business throughout the downtown core has, too. Improvements to watch technology have driven repairs down somewhat, and big box chains have drawn customers away. read more

The bill is sponsored by D.C. Council member Kenyan R. McDuffie (D-Ward 5). (Courtesy Photo)To address an increase in violent crime within the District, the D.C. Council recently unanimously approved a bill that includes a proposal to pay residents and some youth a stipend to not to commit crimes. The bill is now headed to the mayor’s office for consideration. Sponsored by Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D-Ward 5), the Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results Amendment Act of 2016 (or NEAR Act), hopes to discourage recidivism, while providing behavioral therapy. While many residents agree that something innovative must be instituted to curb violent crimes, offering stipends remains a sticking point for many. “I want to prevent violent crime – particularly gun violence – by addressing the root causes and creating opportunities for people, particularly those individuals who are at the highest risks of offending,” McDuffie, a former prosecutor, said in a statement following the vote. “Implementing the NEAR Act means effective and sustainable crime prevention for District residents, as one homicide in the District is one too many. We know that we cannot simply arrest our way out of crime; prevention is key. This comprehensive bill is a step in the right direction.”McDuffie’s program, modeled after a Richmond, California Program where participants receive up to $9,000 per year, would cost $4.9 million over four years, including $460,000 a year in stipend payments, according to the District’s independent chief financial officer. While Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has yet to allocate funding for the program, some citizens believe it would be worth every cent.Marco Artis, a Ward 7 resident who has spent nearly half of his adult life in the penal system, said he applauds McDuffie’s vision of incorporating mental health and behavioral modification courses into a program to keep violence at bay. However, the stipends, according to Artis, could become problematic.“McDuffie advocates hard for young people and I like that he wants to really treat the person as a victim of the society around them, rather than just a violent person. I didn’t want to fight and commit crimes, but I had to defend myself and I had to feed myself,”Artis told the AFRO. “It’s one thing to fix the person, but if you don’t address the neighborhood, the environment, you are setting someone up to have what money they earn being good citizens, taken from them.”“There is so much random, violent crime in my neighborhood, that I would support any program that ends the crime, and offers an alternative to prison,” Ward 8 resident Chanel Brewer told the AFRO. “We have some young people shooting up bus stops and robbing everyone they see, and a whole lot of others who are the victims of those committing the crimes. We have to address this without packing everyone off to prison.”Under the bill, city officials would identify up to 200 people each year who are considered at risk of either committing or becoming victims of violent crime. Those people would be directed to participate in behavioral therapy and other programs. If they fulfill those obligations and stay out of trouble, they would be paid. The District saw a 54 percent increase in homicides last year. Additionally, in recent months social media and news footage have documented scores of unprovoked attacks on unsuspecting citizens by young people. McDuffie’s efforts would adopt a public health approach to crime prevention and intervention by addressing the root causes of crime in what he believes are long-term, sustainable ways that include law enforcement, workforce development, and social services agencies. As of March 30, there have been 26 homicides in D.C. and violent crime has risen by 15 percent from the same period a year ago. read more
By Micha Green, AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor, mgreen@afro.comColin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the singing of the national anthem in response to police brutality has sparked a national conversation, controversy and trend among other players. While conservatives feel kneeling is disrespectful, others argue it is a strong, respectful protest against an important issue that disproportionately affects Black bodies. Now at Capital Christian Academy in Prince George’s County, football players are joining the movement.Capital Christian Academy football players are deciding to take a knee during the singing of the national anthem in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality.Josiah Gil, 17, one of the members of the Red Storm Capital Christian football team, and a former fellow teammate were pulled over in summer 2017 and asked to get out of the car. When he asked the officer the reason for the stop, Gil said he was told his music was too loud. Appalled by the response and anxious about the realities of police brutality, Gil said his experience with the officer last summer stuck with him.“We ask God to keep everybody safe out here because you never know what could happen,” he told NBC News, adding that he prays when he gets anxious. “You could go out and just have fun and end up in a different place. You could end up in jail, you could end up dead,” he said. From Gil’s own encounter with the police and the negative stories throughout the news and social media, he and his teammates decided it was time to join the national debate and kneel.Their coach, Cornell Wade, approved the Red Storms’ decision to kneel, yet told them if they were going to protest they had to go in full throttle understanding that they might upset some people.“If you take a knee, it’s fine,” Wade said according to NBC News. “But do you understand the real ramifications? You might not just be offending the players on the other team. You might be offending the ref.”The students said they understood, yet at their first game they chose not to kneel because they were afraid they might offend one of the volunteer coaches, Addison Fair Jr., who was in the Marines. Fair’s son, Aydon and had heard that the students chose not to join the protest because of him, unaware that he championed their kneeling. Fair had his own poor experience with police in the past.“I was in the Marine Corps, pulled over, stopped, was never told what I was stopped for, put on the ground on my face with my Marine Corps ID beside my head,” Fair told NBC News. “And the charge, the reason they stopped me: suspicion, because I was a young Black male with a nice car in Palmer Park, Md.”With Fair’s support and the success of and buzz surrounding Kaepernick’s recent Nike commercial, the students decided to kneel at their second game the following week. That game was in Washington County, a predominantly White county in Maryland between the borders of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. When the national anthem began, each member of the team bent down on one knee.“Nobody was nervous,” Aydon Fair told NBC. The crowd “knew exactly what was going on. They knew exactly what we were doing,” he said. The crowd didn’t stir much when the Red Storm decided to kneel and the team won 48-8. However, Capital Christian received messages in the following days saying members of the community felt the students’ actions were disrespectful at the game. The team knelt again at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. While they lost, they felt their actions were important.“I feel like I’m a part of something bigger than me for once in my life,” Fair told NBC. “Makes me feel important.” read more
Arizona families, Arizona farms: working to produce high-quality milk How do cataracts affect your vision? Brady also said he has talked to Mitsubishi officials have assured him that “Mitsubishi’s effort to sell the plant “will not be about getting top dollar for the sale but about doing the right thing.”The plant is the only Japanese-owned auto factory with UAW representation. The union contract at the plant expires next month, with negotiations set to begin in earnest on Monday, said DeVary. Both Brady and Normal Mayor Chris Koos stressed that Mitsubishi’s decision was not about labor issues but because of dramatically falling sales. Brady said the hope now is that the closure of the plant, which had been not been used to capacity as sales fell, “may bring the opportunity to more fully use the capacity of the plant and bring more jobs.”State and local officials would not identify specific companies they plan to recruit, but said they would not limit their outreach efforts to automakers.“We’re confident that we will be able to attract a replacement company in relatively short order,” Koos said. One industry analyst said factors such as the location of the plant and its proximity to a network of suppliers for the Detroit automobile industry could make it attractive to another automaker. But Karl Brauer, a senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, also said that given Mitsubishi’s the financial straits over the past decade, he doubts the company has invested much in technology to bring the plant up to date. (AP) — Mitsubishi Motors confirmed Friday that it plans to stop production at its only U.S. factory and sell the plant in central Illinois that has more than 1,200 workers. The Japanese automaker reviewed its global supply chain and decided it was necessary to end production at the plant and find a buyer, said Dan Irvin, the company’s North American spokesman. The announcement came after Japanese media reported the automaker had decided to end production in the U.S. to focus on Asian markets. 5 things to look for when selecting an ophthalmologist Irvin said Mitsubishi’s board will soon make a formal decision on what will happen to the plant in Normal, Illinois, about 100 miles southwest of Chicago. Company officials hope to find a buyer that will maintain the factory’s employment. The president of UAW Local 2488, Rod DeVary, said workers were told Friday that the plant will cease production on Nov. 30.Annual production at the plant, which makes the Outlander SUV, has fallen to 64,000 vehicles from more than 200,000 in 2002. The company sold only 82,000 vehicles in the U.S. last year — less than 1 percent of the total market.Japan’s leading business newspaper, the Nikkei, reported that Mitsubishi would be the first major Japanese automaker to end production in both the U.S. and Europe. The company has built a plant in Thailand, bought one from Ford in the Philippines, and is building one in Indonesia.Illinois state Sen. Bill Brady, whose district includes Normal, said he and other state officials were already working on a plan to find another manufacturer to buy the factory.“We are going to do everything we can to make sure people know that Mitsubishi no longer needs the facility, but that this is a facility that has a very efficient, world-class workforce and a supplier network that’s second to none,” he said. Comments Share Still, “it is a foundation, a footprint, and there is already a process in place to ship cars from (the plant) and components to it,” he said, adding that another company might do as electronic car maker Tesla Motors did a few years ago when it retooled a shuttered plant in Fremont, California.“They had to basically start from scratch and now it is a very vibrant plant,” he said.___Follow Alan Scher Zagier on Twitter at http://twitter.com/azagier .Copyright © The Associated Press. Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires This marks only the sixth meeting all-time between the two franchises. The Cardinals won the first matchup back in 1997, but they have lost the past four. Nelson and offensive lineman Earl Watford.UP NEXTAfter back-to-back road games, the Cardinals return home. They host the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, Oct. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 with pregame coverage beginning four hours earlier on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. – First-half penalties. The Cardinals had six for 75 yards, or 16 more yards than the Steelers gained offensively through the first two quarters. Of the six penalties, four were 15-yarders as the officials flagged Bobby Massie (unnecessary roughness), Markus Golden (helmet-to-helmet hit), Chris Johnson/Jonathan Cooper (chop block) and Kevin Minter (unnecessary roughness). Also, an offsides call on Josh Mauro negated a Patrick Peterson interception and Floyd was flagged for offensive pass interference that wiped out his touchdown catch.– Capitalizing on a John Brown fumble, the Steelers took their first lead of the game, 12-10 at 8:45 of the third quarter, with Jones throwing an eight-yard touchdown to Martavis Bryant. Jones, in for Vick after he suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the half, recorded his first career NFL touchdown pass on the Steelers’ first converted third down. Credit to James Harrison, who forced the fumble by laying a huge hit on Brown to knock the ball free.– One week after going 5-for-5 scoring touchdowns inside the red zone, the Cardinals went 1-for-5 with two field goals and a turnover. On the latter, Palmer was targeting John Brown, but Mike Mitchell came up from his free safety position and picked the ball off in the end zone, stopping a potential go-ahead drive. Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Certainly, it was not the homecoming head coach Bruce Arians expected.Nor the outcome the Arizona Cardinals expected.Arians and the Cardinals lost 25-13 to the Steelers in Pittsburgh, where Arians had spent eight seasons, including five as offensive coordinator. With starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger inactive and backup Mike Vick hurt in the second half, the Steelers (4-2) turned to third-string quarterback Landry Jones — and all Jones did was go 8-of-12 for 168 yards and two touchdowns. – Just a dominant first quarter by the Cardinals defense. Led by Deone Bucannon, the Cardinals limited the Steelers to just five total yards on 10 plays. The Steelers went three-and-out, punt and three-and-out on their first three possessions of the game. They gained only one first down. Bucannon had three tackles (two for a loss), first dropping running back Le’Veon Bell five yards and then DeAngelo Williams one yard behind the line of scrimmage.– In the first half, the Cardinals defense allowed only 59 yards, including one official passing yard. The Steelers were 0-for-6 on third down and had more punts (five) than first downs (four). Vick was 3-of-7 for six yards, Bell carried 10 times for 29 yards, while Antonio Brown caught one pass for minus-two yards.– With 10 catches for 196 yards, John Brown went over 100 yards receiving for the second time in his young career. His longest reception was for 45 yards and it came on the very first snap of the game. That drive, unfortunately, stalled. Brown’s other 100-yard performance came against Philadelphia (119) last season.THE BAD– Perfect no more, Chandler Catanzaro failed to connect on a 47-yard field goal in the second quarter, missing wide left. Entering the game, Catanzaro was 7-for-7. Earlier on that drive, Fitzgerald caught a 44-yard pass, his 12th reception of 20 or more yards this season, the most in the NFL. The Cardinals (4-2) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but never sniffed the end zone again.During one stretch, the Steelers outscored the Cardinals 15-3 with Chris Boswell kicking three field goals, including a long of 51 yards.Carson Palmer completed 29-of-45 passes for 421 yards and a touchdown. He was also intercepted twice, none more costly than in the end zone with the chance to go ahead late in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals had more first downs (21-14) and more total yards (469-310) but again, not more points as they lost for the second time in three weeks.THE GOOD– With his 6-yard, first-quarter reception, Larry Fitzgerald has caught at least one pass in 169 straight games, extending his franchise record and keeping alive the longest active streak in the NFL. Interesting, this was Fitzgerald’s first career NFL regular season game at Heinz Field, though in two collegiate seasons at Pittsburgh, he played 13 games at the stadium and recorded 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and 17 touchdowns. – It took six games but Michael Floyd caught his first touchdown pass of the season, good for three yards and an early 7-0 Cardinals lead with 8:17 left in the first quarter. The throw by Palmer gave him 14 scores, establishing a franchise record for touchdown passes in the season’s first six games. His 13 touchdown passes entering the game were a league-high, tied with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers.
