The world’s oldest bakery school – the National Bakery School at London South Bank University – has this week marked its 125th anniversary. The celebrations included an event hosted by City of London livery company The Worshipful Company of Bakers, at Bakers’ Hall, and attended by leading industry figures. On display was a spectacular cake created over the past eight months by Jane Hatton, expert baker from the National Bakery School.Baked in the shape of a sculptural monument, incorporating five traditional cake shapes – square, hexagon, petal, roundel and sphere – the cake is coated with white icing, displaying decorative reliefs and motifs. These include flowers, London South Bank University’s heraldic shield, a new crest created to mark the National Bakery School’s 125-year anniversary and the coat of arms belonging to The Worshipful Company of Bakers.Guests at the event were able to sample a new, bottled beer brewed from surplus bread to mark the occasion.“The National Bakery School is a shining example of how higher education and employers can work together to produce the highly skilled graduates industry needs,” said London South Bank University vice-chancellor Professor David Phoenix.Echoing this, Paul Morrow, master of The Worshipful Company of Bakers and managing director of British Bakels, said: “Bakels will only prosper if we have customers who are trained in the application of bakery ingredients and expert staff who can support those customers. We therefore pledge to support the National Bakery School as they educate and provide career opportunities for young bakers.”The school now faces the challenge of inspiring the next generation of bakers – from developing craft skills through to investing in applied scientific baking research, added National Bakery School head Elaine Thomson.“Historic technological advances in the field of baking science and changes within the education landscape have already helped to increase the diverse range of courses we offer at LSBU and this offering will continue to expand in future. “Our vision is to be a truly national school, which will both meet and enhance the needs of all of the industry partners we work with.”British Baker recently delved into the archives of the National Bakery School at London South Bank University. June 15, 2003 Regular News June 15, 2003 Letters Mock TrialWe felt great pride when we saw the wonderful picture and story concerning South Dade High School’s state mock trial victory in the May 15 News. It was indeed gratifying to see the support that your wonderful publication was bestowing upon our team, but it was even more gratifying to see the overwhelming support — both financial and moral — that was bestowed upon the team by the members of The Florida Bar.The team represented Florida in the 20th National High School Mock Trial Championship in New Orleans May 8 and finished the tournament ranked fifth in the nation. None of this would have been possible without the support and generosity of The Florida Bar.The South Dade Mock Trial Team 2003 AdvertisingI notice that the News’ Attorneys Exchange advertising section does not have the required ethics disclosure (“The hiring of a lawyer. . . “) Is there an exception to the rules for Bar or trade publications? If not, are those of us who advertised in the News now subject to Bar grievance proceedings? Just think of the seemingly odd implication: Lawyers disciplined by The Florida Bar for advertisements they placed in a Florida Bar publication.Leo Bueno Miami Editor’s Note: The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Advertising has determined that attorney-to-attorney advertisements published in the News are not governed by the attorney advertising rules, including the filing requirement. All advertising is subject to editorial review prior to publication to ensure it meets the general regulations concerning lawyer advertisements, and publication does not reflect an endorsement of the advertisers’ goods, services, or opinions. read more

Topics : A coronavirus outbreak at a sumo stable in Tokyo has infected 19 people, the governing body said Thursday, adding that a tournament will go ahead this week as planned. The Japan Sumo Association said one wrestler and 18 trainees at the Tamanoi stable have tested positive for the virus, with 12 of those infected sent to hospital. The cases follow the death in May of a 28-year-old sumo after contracting coronavirus, the sport’s first Covid-19 fatality. How can Ashantigold qualify? It’s a multi-way route to qualification for the Miners. Second in Zone A with 20 points, 1 behind leaders Asante Kotoko, a win against Eleven Wonders away from home will guarantee their place in the last two irrespective of how other results pan out. They will even finish top of the group provided Asante Kotoko do not beat Aduana Stars away.If Kjetil Zachariassen’s men draw, they can only qualify if Medeama do not win their home game against Berekum Chelsea.A defeat can still ultimately lead to qualification provided Medeama fail to beat Berekum Chelsea. The Miners have a better head to head over Medeama and in the event that Medeama draws and Ashgold lose, both teams will be level on 20 points, sending the Miners through on head to head.Medeama need to win and hope Kotoko and Ashantigold drop points for them to qualifyHow can Medeama qualify?Third-placed Medeama’s journey to the semis is slightly more complicated than that of Ashantigold with 2 points behind Zone A leaders Kotoko and 1 behind second placed Ashantigold. In the event of a win against Berekum Chelsea at home, Medeama would still need both Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold or either of them to drop points for them to qualify. Medeama will qualify along with Kotoko in the event that both Kotoko and Ashantigold fail to win their last matches. If one of Kotoko and Ashantigold wins, Medeama will qualify along with the winner.Medeama will be eliminated even if they win their game and both Ashantigold and Kotoko also record victories.Failure to beat Berekum Chelsea, and Medeama would be out, no matter what happens in the games involving Kotoko and Ashantigold.Liberty will need to win their last game and hope Ebusua Dwarfs beat Karela for them to qualifyHow can Liberty Professionals qualify?Liberty are 3rd in Zone B behind already qualified Hearts of Oak and and 2 points behind second placed Karela United.Liberty host already eliminated WAFA and Karela host second from bottom Ebusua Dwarfs.Liberty can only qualify if they win their match against WAFA and Karela lose at home to Dwarfs. Any other kind of result will see Karela qualify with Hearts of Oak.Ultimately, only Ashantigold have their faith in their owns. Medeama and Liberty would need to win and for other teams to do them favors before they can secure passage into the last 4.All Zone A matches have been rescheduled for Thursday 23 May 2019. Zone B matches will come off on Sunday 26 May 2019.Group Standings:The current group standings heading into the last round of matches With Aduana Stars effectively eliminated from the race to qualify for the semi finals of the ongoing NC Special competition, three of Betway’s sponsored clubs stand a chance of stealing a spot in the last 4 with just one game to the end of the group stages. That notwithstanding, the Ogya lads can still become an important piece of this last day chess drama.Ashantigold and Medeama can both qualify for the semis with the top 3 in that zone only separated by a 2 points going into the last day. Liberty Professional’s task is slightly harder in Zone B. With Hearts of Oak having already guaranteed their place in the semis with a top place finish, the race to finish second is a straight fight between the Dansoman-based side and Karela United. The top 2 in Zones A and B will square off in the semi finals of the competition, with the ultimate winner guaranteed a slot in next season’s CAF Champions League as Ghana’s representatives. There is no debating high stakes in these fixtures.Ashantigold will qualify with victory on the last day read more
Facebook0Tweet0Pin0Submitted by Westport WineryWestport Winery earned the Best of Class award for their 2014 vintage of Mermaid’s Merlot at the West Coast Wine Competition held in Windsor, California, on February 6 and 7. For Westport this is a significant indication of the continuity and quality of their wines from year to year, as the previous vintage of Mermaid was ranked the number one Bordeaux wine under $30 in the Northwest in 2016 by Wine Press Northwest.Director of Winemaking and co-owner of the resort, Dana Roberts said, “Our family has worked diligently for the past few years to solidify our grape sourcing with the top growers in the state. The result of this collaboration and partnership is our ability to provide our guests with top award-winning selections from any of our thirty-four wines and two hard ciders.” All Merlot grapes in this vintage were harvested within the Yakima Valley AVA, with 69% from Red Willow Vineyard, 30% from Two Blondes Vineyard, and 1% Syrah from Discovery Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA.In their tasting notes, Mermaid is described as “an enchanting floral bouquet with refreshing red fruit.” In their restaurant, the Roberts’ family recommends this wine be served with their char-broiled Kalbi beef ribs. In addition to food pairings, they uniquely offer music pairings as well, in this case, the song Landslide by Stevie Nicks. Each of Westport’s labels benefits a different local charity with a portion of the proceeds from this wine dedicated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Grays Harbor. This is a charity about which they are most passionate since Dana’s sister and business partner, Carrie, the winery’s general manager and cidermaker, is a leukemia survivor. Their mother and business partner, Kim Roberts, a former Washington wine commissioner, is currently undergoing treatment for fallopian cancer. Photo courtesy: Westport Winery.Shorebird Chardonnay earned a gold medal at this competition with grapes from Connor-Lee Vineyard located near Othello, in the Columbia Valley AVA. A portion of the proceeds from this wine is devoted to the Grays Harbor Audubon Society. In their restaurant, it is recommended that this unoaked Chardonnay, described as “sophisticated, starbursts, clean and crisp” be enjoyed with fresh pan-fried oysters grown locally by their neighbors at Brady’s. The more modern music pairing with the song How I Feel by Flo Rida exemplifies the family’s unusual take on the wine business. Co-owner Blain Roberts said, “We think wine should be fun. Something to be enjoyed with your favorite foods, your favorite friends, and your favorite music. Beyond that, we don’t dictate a lot of rules.” The previous vintage of this wine earned Best of Class at the 2016 Savor NW wine competition, again, highlighting the winery’s commitment to continuity from vintage to vintage.Additionally, each wine is commemorated in the gardens with sculptures created by local artists. Lisa Humbyrd Murphy welded the Mermaid sculpture located in the winery’s four-tiered Meditation Garden. Mike Peterson created the Shorebird sculpture located next to the winery’s 7.5KW solar array. The Mermaid label is a photograph by Blain Roberts. The Shorebird label is a watercolor by his surfing partner Darryl Easter.Westport Winery Garden Resort won Best Boutique Winery, Best Winery, and Best Wine Shop at the recent Best of the South Sound Awards from South Sound Magazine. In 2016 Westport Winery was honored as one of the top twenty most admired wineries in North America by Winery & Vineyard Management Magazine.
